Earl Ruth

Earl Dean Ruth, age 77, of Calhoun, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his compassionate family.

Earl was born on Aug. 19, 1939 to the late Earl Kyle Ruth and Virginia Ruth Goins. Prior to his retirement, he was employed in the transportation industry. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Philadelphia Baptist Church. Earl loved spending time with his grandchildren. When he was able, he loved riding motorcycles, square dancing, woodworking and gardening.

Besides his parents, he was proceeded in death on June 1 by his beloved sister, Barbara Ruth Smith of Hixson, Tenn. His brother, Dennis Kyle Ruth of Opelika, Ala. also precedes him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Carol Logan Ruth of Calhoun; two sons, Chuck Ruth and his wife, Laura, of Calhoun and Keith Ruth and his wife, Heather, of Serenbe; five grandchildren, Logan Ruth, Hannah Ruth, Madison Ayers, Dean Ruth and Zachary Ruth; three sisters, Pamela Ruth Ledford of Cleveland, Tenn., Tanya Ruth McDonnell of Winter Springs, Fla. and Karen Ruth Hatcher of Marietta also survive.

Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, July 5 at 2:30 p.m. from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Pastor Tim McCulley officiating. Burial will follow in Chandler Cemetery with Rev. Greg Free in charge of graveside rites.

Pallbearers serving will include Reggie Smith, Jeff Smith, Logan Ruth, Zachary Ruth, Edward Owens and Roger Bearden.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 5 from 1 until 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Barnette Haynes, Jr.

Mr. Barnette Quentin Haynes, Jr., 77, of Calhoun died Thursday, June 29, 2017 at his home. He was born in Gordon County on July 15, 1939, son of the late Barnette Quentin Haynes, Sr., and the late Nell Dacus Haynes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jimmie Lou Davis Haynes.

Mr. Haynes was a veteran, serving his country in the United States Army. He was a long-time teacher in the Calhoun and Gordon County School systems.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sheae and Jeff Wyatt, of Calhoun; his grandsons, Dr. Josh Wyatt (Sally), and Jeremy Wyatt of Calhoun; his sister, Cynthia Cross of Calhoun; and nephews, Carl Cross (Gaye), and Eric Cross (Tracy).

Honoring his wishes, his body will be cremated, and no services will be held.

Arrangements are by Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home of Calhoun.

Robert DeFreese

Robert Rhea DeFreese, age 86, of Calhoun passed away Sunday morning, July 2, at his residence.

Robert was born Feb. 25, 1931 in Gordon County, son of the late Rhea and Elsie DeFreese. He was a well-known, self-employed plumber and electrician and a member of Reeves Baptist Church. Robert also served his country faithfully in the United States Navy.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Rogers DeFreese; his brothers and sisters, Betty DeFreese Kirby, Mary Jull, Spud DeFreese, and twins Alda and Jewell DeFreese.

Survivors include his son, David “Skeeter” DeFreese and his wife, Joan, of Calhoun; daughter, Martha Neighbors and her husband, Dewayne Johnson, of Lindale; one brother, Billy DeFreese of Florida; and a nephew, Eddie Rogers of Calhoun. Four grandchildren, Charlie McGinnis and his wife, Brandy, Tiffany Loftis and her husband, Dustin, Anthony Brake and Tiffany Goforth also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 5 at 4:30 p.m. from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Dr. Stephen Pearson officiating. Burial will follow in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers serving include Dustin Loftis, Dakota McGinnis, Brison McGinnis, Eddie Rogers and Chris Rogers.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 5 from 2 - 4:30 p.m. prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

Shannon Sheriff

Shannon Marie Sheriff, 37, of Calhoun, died Friday, June 30, 2017 at her home following an extended illness. She was born in Gordon County on August 23, 1979, daughter of Willard and Marie Nolan Hall.

Shannon was a 1998 graduate of Gordon Central High School. She had a smile and laugh that was contagious. She had a big heart, and would do anything for anybody. She had a strong love for the Lord and her family, especially her girls and her husband.

She leaves behind her high school sweetheart and loving husband of 18 years, Jake Sheriff; her daughters, Leah Marie Sheriff and Hannah Grace Sheriff; her parents, Willard and Marie Hall; a brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Patty Hall, Jr., of Gaylesville, AL; a sister, Vanessa Connie Hall of Calhoun; grandparents, Lloyd “Boots” Hall, and Bertha Upton; great-grandmother, Ruby Thomason; and special nieces, Kirsten Hall of Piedmont, AL, and Constance Hall of Calhoun.

Services to honor the life of Shannon Marie Sheriff will be held Wednesday, July 5th at 1:00 PM from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Max “Bud” Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in Crane Eater Cemetery. Pallbearers serving will include Anthony Moore, Josh Childers, Donald Childers, Gage Jones, Vincent Hall, and Caleb Sheriff.

The Sheriff family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 4th from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
