Crowley selected Mayor Pro Tem at most recent meeting of City Council

Calhoun City Councilman George Crowley, who was recently elected back onto the Calhoun City Council, was selected as the 2018 Mayor Pro Tem at the most recent meeting of the Council on Monday, Jan. 8.

For reporting purposes, the following city departments will be handled by:

Councilwoman Jackie Palazzolo- Public Works, Library, Zoning Advisory Board and City Recreation Department.

Councilman Al Edwards- Electric, Telecommunications, Building Inspections, Schools and Safety Committee.

Councilman Ray Denmon- Water and Sewer Operations, Water and Sewer Construction, Downtown Development Authority, Main Street Program and Historic Preservation.

Councilman George Crowley- Police, Municipal Court, Fire, Revolving Loan and Airport Authority.

The Council approved a zoning change request from R-2 to C-2 for .482 acre at 2018 River Street by Samantha Lusk.

The Council approved a beer package alcoholic beverage license application for San Marcos, located at 90 East May Street.

A request by the Calhoun Police Department to purchase a 2016 Nissan Rogue for $15,800 for the Criminal Investigation Division was approved by the Council. The money will come from Asset Forfeiture Account #1.

Change Order 4 for the MCC Replacement Project in the amount of $281,000, which was recommended by Calhoun Utilities Water and Wastewater Director Jerry Crawford was approved by the Council. The project is from the 2005 SPLOST.

The Council approved a street closing request from the DDA, CVB and Gordon County Chamber of Commerce for this year’s BBQ, Boogie & Blues, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28. The professional BBQ competitors will be in Downtown to set up for the competition on Thursday, April 26, 2018. This will require that the short block of King Street between Court Street and Oothcalooga Street be limited access only. This block will remain closed until Saturday, April 28 at 9 p.m. In addition to this short block closure, it was approved that the section of Park Avenue from Harlen Street to Oothcalooga Street be closed/limited access only from Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Saturday at 7 p.m. In addition, the Council approved the section of Court Street from King Street to Wall Street to close on Friday, April 27 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. Wall Street/Highway 41 will not be closed for the annual event this year.

A first reading of an annexation and zoning request of C-2 for .72 acres, at a location of 1133 South Wall Street, by Badruddin Lallani DBA Raceway Groceries; a first reading of an annexation and zoning request for C-2 for 3.51 acres by Licia Davis DBA Bellwood Nursery; a first reading of a variance request for a side setback of 6 feet, from 10 feet to 4 feet, at a location of parcel C65-015, by Phillip Beamer DBA Arby’s; a first reading of a beer and wine package license for Walgreen Company D/B/A Rite Aid #11828, at a location of 1101 Red Bud Road; a first reading of a beer and wine package license for Walgreen Company D/B/A Rite Aid #4751, at a location of 910 South Wall Street.

The next meeting of the Calhoun City Council will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 22 in the Conference Room of the Downtown Depot on King Street.
