Calhoun Kiwanis was looking to raise funds over the recent holidays to pay for scholarships for area high school seniors that have demonstrated high performance, exemplary community service and have a need for financial support to go to college. Raising funds can be difficult during the holidays as everyone is rushing to complete shopping and finish projects before getting together for holiday festivities.

Members of the Kiwanis Board met to discuss ideas. It was decided to continue and expand the “Christmas on Kiwanis” raffle fundraiser that was held the previous year. Instead of just one gift card, it was decided the club would offer two Walmart Gift Cards as prizes, one for $150, and a grand prize of $500. The Club would again sell tickets for $5 for a chance to win the gift cards and be able to purchase gifts.

The Club received funds for the card by obtaining donations from local businesses and organizations. These sponsors included Georgia Cumberland Academy, Georgia Bank and Trust, Gordon Hospital, Greater Community Bank and Walmart.

The drawing was held at Greater Community Bank, the Club’s weekly meeting location, and was broadcast on Facebook Live. The winner of the $150 gift card was Bridget Young and the winner of the $500 gift card was Natalee Leonard.

The funds that were raised during this time will fund scholarships for area seniors that will continue their community service and help others for many years to come.

A special thanks to everyone that was a part of this community service project. The success of the project is all about caring people working together!
