The Calhoun Middle and High School Dramatic Arts Department will present the popular musical Hairspray at the CHS Blackbox Theatre on Friday, Dec. 9; Saturday, Dec. 10 and Sunday, Dec. 11.
“Hairspray” is an American musical based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and rhythm and blues.
While “Hairspray” has many comedic moments, it is also a commentary on the American society in the 1960’s on social issues such as racial divide. The musical is situated in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, where teenager Tracy Turnblad has a dream of dancing on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, and meets a colorful array of characters and fights to integrate the dance show.
Show times are Dec. 9-10 at 7 p.m. with matinee performances on Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
All tickets are general admission and are $10 each. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the CHS front office or online at showtix4u.com.
