Annual community-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute service set for Sunday, Jan. 14

Community invited to place flowers at MLK Memorial on Court Street anytime on Monday, Jan. 15

The annual community-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute service has been set for 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018 at Friendship Baptist Church, located at 452 West Line Street in Calhoun. This year’s theme is “Never Lose Hope, Unity Wins.”

According to Walter Harris, chair of the local MLK, Jr. Commission, the memorial musical service, held to remember King and his vision, will consist of local and regional musical guests, including Four Brothers of Rome, Virgil Harrison & Company, Judge Richie Parker, Laron Hamilton, Mercedes McBride, and Big C & Voices of Zion, along with others.

Harris said there will also be “soul up-lifting speakers that will comment on unity, including local council members and city law enforcement.”

The service is held each year in memory of King, the African American Baptist minister, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968.

“I thank God that, for the most part, what’s happening around the nation has not been reflective of what is happening in our small community of Calhoun-Gordon County,” said Harris. “Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted to unite everyone regardless of race and religion. I want people to come together as one from our city to our county. If we can’t come together, then let’s start with loving. That’s the beginning of healing.”

Harris said that any local churches, praise teams or choirs that would like to participate in the tribute musical can call 706-263-4584 to sign-up. All are welcome to participate.

After the service, the public is invited to enjoy the Coretta Scott King reception at McConnell Road Community Center in Calhoun.

On Monday, Jan. 15, the public is invited to place flowers at the MLK Memorial, located on Court Street, and pray for the community.
