Bartow County Sheriff's Office

Around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, officers with the Adairsville Police Department, along with Bartow County Fire Department personnel, responded to 105 Sparks Street in Adairsville in reference to a structure fire.  The 911 caller stated this was a vacant, boarded mobile home and that someone was inside the residence and appeared to be throwing objects out of a window.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed smoke coming from the building. As members of the Fire Department were extinguishing the fire, officers with the Adairsville Police Department were interviewing witnesses to gather information as to the cause of the fire.

Officers also spoke with a male subject by the name of Stephen Howell, 29, of 470 Old Hwy 41, Adairsville, who witnesses stated was the subject inside the residence.  While speaking with Howell, officers observed soot on Howell’s face and smelled the odor of smoke coming from his person. Detectives arrived on scene and asked Howell if he would come to the police department for further questioning; Howell agreed.

Upon arrival at the police department, detectives interviewed Howell and also met with a Bartow County Arson Investigator.  After the interview, Howell was arrested and charged with burglary and first degree arson. Howell is currently being held in the Bartow County Jail.
