Burnes named Officer of the Year

Rome City Commissioner Craig McDaniel (from left) reads a proclamation to Police Officer of the Year Chase Burnes as his wife, Alisha Burnes, son Liam Burnes and Police Chief Denise Downer McKinney watch. Pfc. Burnes captured a driver firing a gun into traffic leaving the Wings Over North Georgia Air Show on Oct. 22, 2017. The City Commission recognized him Monday for his "ability to remain calm under extreme pressure and avoid deadly force." Downer McKinney said Burnes was first hired in December 2004, left for the county police department in 2010, and was rehired in May 2016. "We're so proud of Chase and we're glad he came home," she said.
