KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) -- Taylor Varnell tossed six scoreless innings, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators over the Rome Braves in a 2-1 win on Friday.

Varnell (1-0) allowed two hits while striking out seven to pick up the win.

Kannapolis got on the board first in the third inning when Steele Walker hit a two-run triple.

The Braves cut into the deficit in the seventh inning when Greg Cullen hit an RBI single, scoring Justin Dean.

Jasseel De La Cruz (0-1) went 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and two hits in the South Atlantic League game. He also struck out three and walked two.
