ELLENWOOD, Ga. (AP) — Officials say a metro Atlanta man has been sentenced for beating and sexually assaulting two girls over the span of two years.

DeKalb County district attorney spokeswoman Yvette F. Jones says 56-year-old Russell Cook, of Ellenwood, was sentenced to seven life terms, plus 89 years in prison and one year of probation on Wednesday. He was convicted of several charges, including child molestation, rape and cruelty to children.

News outlets report Cook started abusing the then 14-year-old and 10-year-old victims in 2009. Jones says Cook often sexually assaulted the children after physically restraining, beating and choking them.

The abuse was uncovered when one of the children told a neighbor who called the police.
