PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) — An early-morning police chase through Alabama and Georgia ended in a police shooting that's being investigated by state authorities.
WRBL-TV reports that the incident began in Alabama around 3:30 a.m. Monday.
Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor says Phenix City police began a chase and his deputies joined in. The pursuit then crossed the Georgia state line into Columbus and Cusseta, where the suspect's vehicle struck a guard rail.
Taylor says deputies from Russell and Chattahoochee counties approached the vehicle when it began backing up. He says deputies from both counties opened fire to avoid being run over.
The driver was wounded and is hospitalized in stable condition, but neither deputy was hurt. The suspect was identified as 46-year-old Johnny Slocum.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting.
