Local muscian pens Charley Pride song

One could say Ed Gowens has a lot of pride. The local songwriter co-wrote a song that famed country musician Charley Pride is recording for his first studio album since the mid-1990’s.

“America The Great” is a patriotic song written by Ed Gowens and Larry Mercey and if the first live performance of it is any indication, they have a hit on their hands. It appears on the just-released “Choices” CD by Pride.

“Charley performed it (last week) in Plant City, Florida,” said Gowens. “Before he finished, the entire crowd was standing.”

Gowens, who has been in the music industry for more than 30 years, said he was unable to attend the Plant City show, but Mercey was there and told him about it.

He said the inspiration came from the movement to remove god from schools, courts, and other aspects of American life.

“It’s religious to me,” said Gowens.

Gowens has resided in Calhoun most of his life. He has written over 500 songs, and various artists from around the world have recorded over 200 of them. Gowens was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall Of Fame, Hall Of Honor in 2008 in Atlanta, GA.

Larry Mercey (co-writer) is a member of the famed “Mercey Brothers” of Canada and had several Hit songs in the 1970’s and 80’s.

“I am so very proud of our song. It proves that if you try hard enough and stick to your plan, you can make your dreams come true,” said Gowens.
